How Guardrail Is Made
Guardrail is roll formed from galvanized coil on a guardrail roll forming machine: the strip passes through forming stations into the W or thrie shape, holes are punched at the ends and splice points, and the rail is cut to length automatically. Installation Basics
- Posts: driven or set in concrete at the spacing required by the system (commonly 1.9-4 m depending on standard and location).
- Blockouts: spacers between rail and post that let the rail deflect on impact.
- Rail splicing: rails overlap or join with splice bolts at the standard pattern; Z or offset joints maintain a smooth face.
- Height: the rail face is set at the height in the tested system (commonly about 700-800 mm to the top of rail from the road surface, varying by standard).
- End treatments: terminals or crash cushions are used at rail ends and transitions between systems.
