Its cross-section is shaped like the letter "W" - two valleys and a central peak (or two waves) - which gives the panel its stiffness while keeping weight manageable. It is also called W beam barrier, two-wave guardrail, or simply highway guardrail.

Why Is It Called a W Beam?

The name comes from the profile of the panel. When you look at a W beam guardrail from its end, the sheet metal bends into a W-shaped section with two waves. The corrugation adds bending strength in both directions - a flat sheet of the same thickness would buckle easily, while the W section resists the impact of a vehicle. A heavier variant, the thrie beam, has three waves and is used where higher impact energy is expected, such as bridges and medians.

Standard W beam guardrail panels are produced in 4,320 mm lengths (with +/- 2 mm cutting accuracy on automatic lines), around 312 mm cover width and about 90 mm profile height. Common strip thickness is 2.5 - 4.0 mm.

Panels are normally formed from galvanized steel for corrosion resistance, or from cold-rolled carbon steel / Q235 with a hot-dip galvanized finish. Pre-galvanized coil (GI) is the most common raw material for roll-formed guardrail production.

How Is a W Beam Guardrail Made?

W beam guardrails are produced by roll forming - the same continuous process used for roofing sheets, purlins and steel framing profiles. A guardrail roll forming line runs the coil through five stages in one pass:

  1. Decoiling - the steel coil feeds into the line (typically a 10 t hydraulic decoiler)
  2. Leveling - strip straightening for consistent forming
  3. Hydraulic punching - bolt slots and fixing holes are punched in-line
  4. Roll forming - 15-16 stations progressively bend the strip into the W section
  5. Cutting - automatic cut at the set panel length, with batch and quantity presets
