What Is a Roll Forming Machine?

A roll forming machine is a production line that continuously bends a flat strip of metal — usually steel coil — into a desired cross-section profile. The strip passes through a series of roller stations, each of which bends the metal a little more until the final shape is complete. Unlike press braking, which forms one piece at a time, roll forming works like a conveyor: coil in one end, finished profile out the other, cut to length automatically.

Roll forming is the fastest and most economical way to produce long, constant-section metal profiles in high volume. It is used to make roofing sheets, wall cladding, purlins, guardrails, cable trays, shutter doors, floor decking, storage racks and hundreds of other industrial profiles.

How Roll Forming Works

  1. Decoiling: a coil of steel strip is mounted on an uncoiler and fed into the line.
  2. Straightening and guiding: the strip is flattened and guided to enter the first station exactly aligned.
  3. Progressive forming: the strip passes through a sequence of roller stations. Each station makes a small, controlled bend; station by station the profile takes shape without scratching the surface.
  4. In-line operations: punching, notching, embossing and cutting can be built into the line so holes and cut lengths are made automatically during forming.
  5. Cut-off: a shear (or flying shear for continuous lines) cuts the profile to programmed length, and sheets stack automatically.

  • Press braking forms short pieces one bend at a time — flexible for small batches but slow and labor-intensive for long sections.
  • Extrusion applies to aluminum and plastic, not steel strip profiles, and is not comparable for roll-formed sections.
